Enzymes serving as marker for liver disease:

  1. Aspartate amino transferase ( AST) : It is also known as SGOT, which is found in skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle and liver. Its normal value is 100 IU/L in almost all animals except horse and is greatly increased during liver disease. Little amount of increased levels can be seen in muscle injury also.
  2. Alanine amino transferase (ALT):It is also known as SGPT, which is very much increased in cats and dog during liver disease. Its normal level is also around 100IU/L but reaches upto 5000 IU/L during liver disease. ALT is more specific than AST during liver disease.
  3. Alkaline phosphatase ( ALP): Its normal rage is between 100-500 IU/L.  its value is increased during biliary tract disease and small amout of increase can be seen during bone disease also.

It is also called as marker of obstructive jaundice.

  1. Sorbiol dehydrogenase (SDH): This is an ALT substitute in horses and it is increased during the hepatocellular damage. Its level is below 5 IU/L and above that level indicates the damage of the liver.
