Horticulture
- The term horticulture is derived from the Latin word “hortus” that means garden and “cultura” that means cultivation
- Horticulture is concerned with production and management of crops or plants of economic importance
- Fruits, vegetables, flowering plants, ornamental trees and lawn, grasses are basic components of horticulture Horticulture is concerned as both art and science
- The design and placement of different horticultural plants in formal garden is an art which is maintained properly by scientific principles and techniques such as bonsai culture, miniature, etc
- Developed crop management practices such as proper fertilization, timely irrigation, adequate pruning, effective pest control methods and desirable propagation techniques, demonstration of biological phenomena such as dormancy, juvenility, flowering, fruit set, fruit maturity has however made horticulture more of science than an art
In short, horticulture can be defined as an agricultural science which deals with the scientific study of production, utilization and improvement of fruit vegetable and ornamental plants.
