Crop Adaption
a. Temperature
- Warm and humid climate desirable with temperature 24-370 C.
- < 200C and >400C restricts plant growth.
b. Light
- Typical short-day plant thus flowers at the approach of Aug-Sept.
- Critical photoperiod is 12.5 hours, above which flowering is retarded.
- Long photoperiod induces vegetative growth.
- olitorius more responsive to short photoperiod than C. capsularis.
c. Rainfall
- 1500 mm rain per annum with 250 mm from March to May is ideal.
- Younger stages sensitive to water stagnation.
- In later stages, C. capsularies tolerate waterlogging better.
d. Relative Humidity (RH)
- Permissible diurnal variation in RH for better growth and fiber quality is 60-90%.
e. Edaphic requirements
- The new gray alluvial soil of good depth, well aerated, with silt deposition from annual floods, is best for jute.
- However, jute is grown widely in sandy loams and clay loams.
- Desirable pH 6-7.5.
- It is generalized that loam for capsularis and sandy for olitorius is most suitable.
