Extraction of fiber:
- Fiber from the retted jute stalks are extracted gently by beat-break-jerk method. In this method about 10-12 reeds are taken at a time and stiffer root ends are beaten with a small wooden hammer (mallet) to loosen the fibre.
- The bundle is then broken in the middle and jerked in water so that the sticks slip off. Beating reeds with wooden sticks spoils fiber quality.
- The extracted fibres are washed with water, squeezed for dehydration and dried over bamboo frame for 2-3 days.
- Finally, they are tied into small bundles to be sold in the market.
- The jute plant’s fibres lie beneath the bark and surrounded the woody central part of stem. To extract the fibres from the stem, the process is carried out in the following stages
- Bundle stalk
- Retting
- Stripping
- Washing
- Squeezing excess
- Sun dry
- Bailing
- Kutcha packing
- Storage/ Transport
