Nutrient Management
- Recommended dose for olitorius is 20-60kg N/ha and for capsularis is 40-80kg N/ha.
- Depending upon soil requirement, 20-40kg = P2O5/ha and 20-60 kg K2O/ha can be applied.
- ½ N with full dose of P2O5 and K2O as basal dose at the time of sowing or before sowing. Remaining dose of nitrogen in two split doses, the first ¼ N at 4-5 weeks of crop age and second ¼ N at 45-60 DAS.
- When Mg deficiency occurs in soil then 20-40 kg MgO/ha should be applied at basal dose.
- capsularis is more susceptible to S deficiency than olitorius. So, S containing fertilizers such as ammonium sulphate is recommended to apply as top dressed.
- 5-8t/ha FYM should be applied and incorporated to soil at least one month before sowing.
- In Nepal, 60:30:60 NPK kg/ha is applied in capsularis varieties and 40:20:40 NPK kg/ha in olitorius varieties.
Water Management
- One pre-sowing and three post sowing irrigations before onset of monsoon have been found optimum for early sown jute.
- Critical stages are germination and knee-high stage.
- Under dry tropics and sub-tropics, it requires 5-6 irrigations.
Weeding and Hoeing
- Amaranthussp, Cynodondactylon, Digitariasp, Cyperusrotundus, Chorchorustricularis, Digeraarvensis are major weeds.
- Critical period in terms of crop weed competition is 25-60 DAS.
- Yield reduces by 50-55% in capsularis and 59-75% in olitorius spp.
- 2-3 hoeing at early stage followed by 1-2 hand weeding.
- 1st weeding= 2-3 weeks after sowing
- 2nd weeding= 5-6 weeks after sowing
- Application of basalin @1.0kg a.i./ha in 1000ltr of water as pre-plant is recommended.
- Pendimethalin @0.6kg/ha is applied before sowing.
