Process of Sugar Extraction from Sugarbeet
- Harvested Sugarbeets are washed and cut into V shaped slice which are called cossettes
- The cossettes are passed through a long vessel called as diffuser where cossetes are mixed with hot water in the ratio of 2:1.
- The hot liquid that exits from the diffuser is called raw juice which in then purified before going crystallization process
- The raw milk is mixed with lime milk to precipitate the major impurities(i.e sulfate, phosphate, citrate and oxalate) to form alkaline sugar.
- The excess of alkaline material in the sugar solution is removed by bubbling of CO2 through the alkaline sugar solution that precipitates the calcium carbonate forming the thin juice.
- Soda ash is mixed with the thin juice to modify the PH and thin juice is concentrated through multiple effect evaporation to make a thick juice .
- The thick juice is then concentrated to a syrup by being boiled under reduced pressure in steam heated vacuum pans.
- The syrup is treated with sulfur dioxide, again filtered and evaporation continued until the sugar crystallizes and mixture of sugar and mollases is seperated in centrifuge
- The washed sugar crystals are then separated and dried in a granulator.
