About Lesson
Types of inflammation:
- Basically, there are two types of inflammation: Acute and chronic
Acute inflammation:
- It is transient response to injury and their onset is sudden.
- They are short-lived, usually lasts for few minutes to hours or few days.
- They are characterized by exudation of fluid and plasma protein (oedema) and migration of leukocytes, mainly neutrophils.
- Chemical mediators like histamine, bradykinin, prostaglandins, leukotrienes plays role in acute inflammatory response to injury.
Chronic inflammation:
- It develops gradually and associated with acute inflammation. If injurious agents are not removed through acute inflammatory process, then chronic inflammation develops.
- It is of long duration usually lasts for few days to weeks, months or even years.
- Active inflammation, tissue destruction and healing process occurs simultaneously in this inflammation.
- It is characterized by infiltration of mononuclear cells, tissue destruction and repair involving vessel proliferation and fibrosis.
- Chemical mediators like cytokines, chemokines, macrophages, plasma proteins plays role in chronic inflammation.
