Land Reform

  • No tangible effects on the skewed distribution of land holdings.
  • Only 23000 ha(<1%) of cultivated land could be acquired for redistribution
  • Beneficiaries were 16000 tenants (1 percent of the total farm families)
  • 8 million tenants were identified
  • Certificate of tenancy were given to 3000000 tenants.
  • Total rents paid by tenants were reduced by requiring them to pay rent only on the main crop instead of total crops.
  • In 1971 and 1973, the rent (385-827 kg/ha of paddy) was fixed in 15 districts.
