Climate:-
Celery best when the weather is relatively cool and with a moderate, well distributed rainfall during the growing seasons. Celery requires a relatively long growing season. The crop also can be grown in relatively dry regions by supplying water artificially. When crop is raised under higher temperature there is a rise in the level of leaf bitterness. Bolting normally occurs when plants are exposed to temperature below 15°c at least for 10 days.
Soil:-
Celery can be grown in different types of good soils but loamy soil with sufficient humus is ideal for getting better production. A good well drained muck or peat soil is considered almost ideal for celery. It is slightly sensitive to acidic soils so doesn’t thrive well on a soil more acidic than ph 5.5. The optimum ph requirement is 6.6.
Field preparation:-
The field should be prepared by thorough ploughing 3 – 4 times to make the soil friable. The top soil should be pulverized and properly leveled by planking. There should be proper drainage to avoid water logging. Compacting loose muck or peat soil by rolling or dragging is desirable.
