TPS technology in Nepal

  • In Nepal, preliminary work on true potato seed (TPS) was started as early as in 1978.
  • The actual practices of potato grow through the use of TPS was started during 1992 /93 (PDS, 1998).
  • The Sarlahi farm and Nucleus Seed Potato Production centre, Nigale, Sindhupalchock has been engaged in TPS production
  • True Potato Seed (TPS) is actual seed developed and produced from the hybridization of two different genotypes of potato ( different parental line)

Selection of Parental line

a) Male line :

  • Fertile pollen, indeterminate growth, disease tolerant and of good combining ability Male line is selected from Solanum andigena
  • TPS-13 (white flower), TPS-67 (pink flower)

 

b) Female Line :

  • Blight tolerant, pollen sterility, good combining ability and high tuber yielder Female line is selected from Solanum tuberosum
  • MF-I, MF-II, TPS-7 (White flower female line)
