Adaptability of ring method:

  • Suited to smooth gentle and uniform land slope and soil having to moderate to slow infiltration rate.
  • Suitable for both row crops and close growing crops.
  • Adapted to grain and fodder crops in heavy soils to ensure adequate irrigation.
  • Also suitable in very permeable soils which must be covered with water rapidly to prevent excessive deep percolation losses.

Advantages of ring method

  • Useful when leaching is required to remove salts from the soil profile.
  • Enables the conservation of rainfall and reduction in soil erosion.
  • Uniform application can be achieved.
  • Even a small streams (2 ltr/sec) irrigation water can be applied efficiently.

Limitations of ring method

  • Ridge interfere with the movement of animal drawn or tractor drawn implements for intercultural operations or harvesting of crops.
  • Crops yield is substantially low on the ridge and in the lateral channels.
  • Problems of lateral drainage.
  • High labor requirement in land preparation and irrigation.
  • Not suitable for crops which are very sensitive to wet soil condition.
