Learn Principles and Practices of Farm Water Management with Rahul

Force Required to operate reciprocating pump:

Fs = Wahs/ns

Where,

a= area of cylinder, m2

l= length of stroke, m

h = total height through which water is raised, m

P = force required to lift the piston, kg.( neglect friction and weight of the piston and connecting rod)

W = specific gravity of water, 1000 kg/m3

Fd = Wahd/nd

FT = Fs + Fd

Then, wt. of water raised in one stroke = wah

Work done in one upstroke = wah x l = P x l

Therefore, P = wah kg.

  • When friction is neglected, P is independent of the diameter of the suction and delivery pipes.
