Socio-economic consequences of soil erosion

  • Soil eroded from the land, along with pesticides and fertilizers applied to fields, washes into streams and waterways.
  • This sedimentation and pollution can damage freshwater and marine habitats and the local communities that depend on them.
  • Economic impacts can include loss of productivity of land, infrastructure and property.
  • Harbour and coastal erosion may adversely affect peoples’ incomes due to a loss of rural productive land.
  • Erosion on or nearby a property can result in a reduction in the value or price of the property.
