Strategies for the Conservation of Biodiversity

  1. Protected areas:
  • These areas play a valuable ecological and economic role by safeguarding outstanding sites of richness, natural beauty and cultural significance.
  • They preserve representative samples of ecological, geological and scenic beauty including genetic verities and species.
  • Therefore, diversity depends on how wild land outside protected areas such as communally and privately owned lands are used and managed.

  1. Agriculture and conservation of biodiversity
  • Agro ecosystem plays an equally important role for maintaining biodiversity.
  • Agriculture land, livestock growing areas, forest and human managed ecosystems cover around two third of the terrestrial surface compared to 5-10% covered by the protected area.
  • It is important to assist rural farmers to design self-sustaining agro-ecosystem which ensure the maintenance of local genetic diversity rather than mono-cropping.
  • A mixed system of farming is often considered more sustainable and ecological then monoculture.
