Type of toxicity
a) Acute – usually immediate, obvious, reversible
b)Delayed – “chronic”, usually from repeated doses
c) Allergic – immune system response to chemicals
a) Acute effects:
I) Oral – examples: burned mouth, sore throat, upset stomach
ii) Inhalation – examples: pain or tightness in chest
iii) Dermal (skin) – examples: itching, blisters, rash
iv) Ocular (eyes) – examples: irritation, temporary or permanent blindness
b) Delayed (Chronic) Effects:
i)May appear long after exposure:
ii) Tumors
iii) Gene effects
iv) Miscarriage
v) Impotence
vi) Birth defects
vii) Infertility
viii) Sterility
viiii) Nervous system disorders
Types of Allergic Effects
a) Systemic – as asthma, shock
b) Skin irritation – rash, blisters, sores
c) Eye and nose – itchy/watery eyes, sneezing
d) Will occur with every exposure to the offending chemical
