Progeny Testing

  • Progeny testing is a method of estimating the individual’s transmitting ability/breeding value for any specific traits based on the average performance of its progeny.
  • It estimates the breeding value/transmitting ability of the sire more accurately since it is based on the average performance of many of its offspring.
  • Progeny testing gives the best and most reliable information about the genetic merit for the sire when compare to other aids to selection.
  • Progeny test is generally carried out for males, but in pluruparous species it can be carried out in females as well.
  • Sire has greater impact on the herd in terms of number of progenies he can leave behind as compared to the female. Therefore, it is called that the “bull is half of the herd”.
