Iron Deficiency Anemia

Causes:

• Inadequate intake of iron from daily diets

• Inadequate absorption of dietary iron

• Infestations such as hookworms and tapeworm

• High requirements of iron particularly during growth and pregnancy

• Non nutritional causes (chronic renal failure, Toxins, rheumatoid arthritis)

Consequences:

• Impaired human function at all stages of life

• Impaired work performances, endurance and productivity

• Increased risk of maternal morbidity and mortality

• Increased risk of sickness and death for the baby

Government action in prevention of IDA:

– Distribution of iron/folate tablets to pregnant women and lactating mothers through hospitals, PHCC, HPs, SHPs and ORCs.

– Intensification program of maternal iron supplementation through Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs).
