Convention on Toxic chemicals

a. Basal convention (5 May 1992):

  • The convention was opened for signature on 22 March 1989, and entered into force on May 1992. Nepal has already ratified the treaty on August 15, 1996 and was fully effective from January 13, 1997.
  • It is an international treaty that was designed to reduce the movements of hazardous waste between nations and specifically to prevents transfer of hazardous waste from developed countries.
  • The convention is also intended to minimize the amount and toxicity of waste generated to ensure their environmentally sound management as closely as possible to the source of generation and assist least develop countries in environmentally sound management of the hazardous and other wastes they generate.

 

b. Rotterdam Convention (Feb 2004)

  • The Rotterdam Convention is global treaty on the prior informed consent (PIC) produce for certain hazardous chemicals and pesticide in international trade.
  • It is that treaty which restrict the movement of chemical pesticides in case of emergency it need to prior inform consent of importing countries.

 

 

c. Stockholm Convention (May 2004)

  • The Stockholm convention was approved on 22 may 2001.
  • The treaty was entered into force from 17 May, 2004. Nepal showed its commitment to this convention by signing the treaty on 5 April 2002.
  • It is global treaty which enforces elimination and reduction of POPs.
