Climate

  • Known as king of temperate fruit.
  • Can be grown at altitude ranging from 1500-2500 masl with minimum chilling period for growth and fruiting.
  • Chilling period of about 600-1500 hours below 70C is required for about 3-4 months so as to satisfy the dormancy requirement and ultimate flowering.
  • An annual rainfall of 100-125 cm is required during growing season.
  • Areas with high velocity of wind are not desirable.

 

Site and soil

  • Slopy sites that allow the free drainage are considered most suitable for apple cultivation.
  • Loamy soil rich in organic matter with slightly acidic (pH 5.5-6.5) with good depth (at least 1.25 cm) and having proper drainage and aeration facilities are ideal.
