Time of rose planting:

  • Roses can be planted at any time of the year if there is irrigation facility.
  • The best recommended time in the Teri is September- October and in hilly areas they are planted in January- April.

 

Layout

  • Roses should be grown in well-designed beds and the beds can be made formal or informal design.
  • Formal shape may be square, rectangular, circular, V shape, L shape etc.

 

Planting:

  • While planting bud union must remain 2.5 to 5.0 cm above soil.
  • Fix the plant in the center, and press the soil around. Stake the plants, which will not topple down by the wind.
  • Irrigate the plants immediately.

 

Spacing

➢ HT roses – 75 X 75 cm (1.5 ft height)

➢ Miniature roses – 45 X 45 cm (< 1.5 ft height)

➢ Standard roses – 120 X 90 cm (3 ft height)

 

Manure and Fertilizer:

  • Rose requires heavy fertilization. High dose of NPK along with high OM are generally prescribed.
  • Actual dose of the fertilizers depends on the fertility status and the organic matter content of the soils.
  • A dose of 25:20:20 NPK g/plant is ideal with (8-10) kg compost or FYM per plant.

 

After care

➢ Sucker should be removed from the base of the plant.

➢ All the faded flowers should be removed time to time.

➢ In roses the fruits are known as hips, which should be removed frequently.

➢ Broken and diseased branches should be removed.

Irrigation

  • A good drenching of rose beds or the basin of the plant at an interval of 7-10 days is desirable.
  • Weekly irrigation and basin irrigation is advisable.
  • Rose cannot stand water logging even for a short period.
  • It will show the sign of distress, which may include yellowing and shedding of leaves.
