Hog Cholera ( Classical swine fever)
- Acute, highly contagious virus disease affecting pigs of all ages
- Characterized by high morbidity and mortality ( >90%)
a) Etiology:
- Pestivirus of Togaviridae family
b) Transmission:
- Direct contact with infected pig
- Ingestion of contaminated feed and water
- Placental route
- Uncooked meat of pig
c) Pathogenesis:
- Entry of virus through mucous membrane à Multiplication in tonsils à initial viremia within 24 hrs à virus reach to spleen, bone marrow
d) Symptoms:
- Fever ( 105-1060F)
- Ocular discharge
- Gluing of eyes
- Purplish discoloration of skin
- Reproductive failure in sow
e) Diagnosis:
- Symptoms and lesions
- ELISA test
- Isolation of virus
f) Differential diagnosis:
- Pasteurellosis
- Salmonellosis
g) Prevention and treatment:
- Affected pigs are slaughtered and carcass buried
- Strict sanitary procedures
- Control pig movement
- Surveillance of infected zone and surrounding area
