Climate
- Cool season crops and produce quality curds in moist and cool growing season.
- It requires mean monthly temperatures of 15 degree centigrade to 21 degree centigrade, but is less tolerant to extremes of heat and cold.
- Temperature for Curd formation : Early varieties : 20-27 oC, Mid season : 15-19 oC , for late(snoball) 10-16 oC
- A check in growth may cause the plant to form ” buttons” when the curds are maturing, they become yellowish, ricey, and leafy and such heads get poor price in the market.
- A temperature below the optimum during the growing season may delay its maturity and cause the curds to remain small.
- Direct sun rays on the curd produce undesirable brown pigmentation and sometimes low temperatures cause purple colouration.
