Introduction
Among the root crops, radish is the most popular crop in Nepal.
Origin
- Radish is probably a native of Europe or Asia.
- As wild radishes are found in the Mediterranean region of Europe, so many people regards its origin to be somewhere in south west Europe.
Botany
- N:- Raphanus sativus
- Family:- cruciferae
- 2n=18
- The enlarged edible roots are fusiform. Botanically this may differ in colour from white to red.
Varieties
- The radish varieties can be divided broadly into 2 groups:
- European or temperate type; for temperate climate.
- Asiatic or tropical and sub-tropical type; for tropical and sub-tropical climate.
a) European type: European type are small in size, mild in taste and early in maturity (usually 3 4 weeks) example of European types varieties are white Jecicle, Pusa himani, rapid red, white tipped etc.
b) Asiatic type varieties: Asiatic type are large than European type and mild pungent. Most of our improved varieties are Asian type. Such as minnow early , 40 days , Japenese white Pusa chetki, Pyathane red, tokinasi, sakurajuma, janpuri giant or newari etc.
