Classification of building
A. On the basis of Load on earth
a, Load bearing buildings ( Wall system ):
- In the case of load bearing buildings, the load of the occupants and the contents are first taken up by the floor, then transferred to the beam, then to the walls, then to the foundation and ultimately to the soil.
- For a load bearing building to be structurally sound, a box action should be developed in it.
- A building is said to have a box action if there is a strong between roof, wall and foundation and whole building acts like a box.
- Horizontal bands are the most important elements to create the box action which are of four types: plinth band, roof band, lintel band, gable band for the slope roof.Corners are vulnerable in these types of buildings.
b. Non-load bearing buildings (Framed buildings ):
- In this case, the role of the wall is replaced by the column/pillar and all the other remaining processes are same as that of load bearing buildings.
- The wall here plays the role of only site partition or separation or coverage of building. These buildings are also called RCC frame buildings.
