Agrometeorology Essentials: Rahul’s Quick Guide for Master’s Prep

Terminologies

  1. Additives: Material added to fertilizer to improve its physical condition.
  2. Amendments: Material added to influence plant growth
  3. Amminization: Protein à amino group
  4. Anion exchange capacity is expressed as centimoles per kg ( Cmol/kg).
  5. Ap: Surface layer of soil disturbed by cultivation or pasturing.
  6. Basic slug: A by-product of steel industry obtained from phosphate iron ores.
  7. Ammonification: Protein à ammonia à ammonium by Bacillus mycoides, B. ramosus, B. vulgaris
  8. Bulky organic manure; Supply plant nutrients in small quantity and organic matter in large quantity.
  9. Positive charge: Cation and negative charge: Anion
  10. Soil tends to be acidic in humid region.
  11. Soil tends to be alkaline when evapotranspiration > precipitation.
  12. Chelates: Organic compound capable of holding plant nutrients thus preventing available form of nutrient to plant.
  13. Colloid: Particle size < 2µ ( 0.002 mm) in diameter.
  14. Colloidal clay: Particle size < 1µ in diameter
  15. Flocculation: Individual tiny soil particles clump together into small clumps or floccules.
  16. Ligand: Chelating substance or donor group of compounds that donate lone pair of electrons.
  17. Muck soil: Containing 20-50 % OM.
  18. Peat soil: Containing 50% OM.
  19. Pedon: Representative of soil ( small volume).
  20. Protonation: Attachment of H+ to OH ions.
  21. Straight fertilizer: Fertilizer that have only one plant nutrient.
  22. Immobilization: Conversion of simple inorganic compound to complex one
  23. Eluviation: Removal of soil from suspension also called leaching.
  24. Localized placement: Placing fertilizer into the soil close to seed or plant.
  25. Mineralization : C:N ratio is 20:1.
  26. Optimum dose: Refers to amount of fertilizer that produces the greatest profit per unit area.
  27. Maximum thermometer: To measure higher temperature; mercury thermometer.
  28. Minimum thermometer: To measure lower temperature; Alcohol thermometer
  29. Thermograph: Mechanical device to record air temperature; continuously.
  30. Winward: Refers to the direction from which wind comes
  31. Leeward: Direction towards which wind blows.
  32. Psychrometer/ hygrometer: Instrument for measuring RH

a) Assman’s psychrometer: RH in crop canopy

b) Hair hygrometer: RH inside room

c) Hygrograph: Record humidity continuosly

33. Critical Nutrient Level: Level below which yield is reduced.
