Entomology Essentials: Rahul’s Quick Guide for Master’s Prep

Food attractants

a) CO2 , water and lactic acid: blood sucking insects

b) Fruit fly ( Docus dorsalis) : methyl eugenol

c) Molasses: Cut worm and army worm

Sex attractants

a) Sex pheromone:

  • Chemically regulating insect behavior are commonly called semi chemicals.
  • Semio-chemicals collectively includes pheromone, Allomone and kairomone.
  • Since, pheromone are secreted outside the body so are called ectopheromone.

b) Alarm pheromone:

  • Reported on homopotera, Isoptera and Hymenoptera.

i) Aphids: pair of cornicles ( secrete tarpens) or siphunculi.

ii) Dysercus : Abdomen terga

iii) Termites (Secrete monoterpene) : Cephatice glands.

iv) Worker bee: Sting apparatus and mandibular glands.

v) Ant ( Secrete ethyl methyl ketone and formic acids) : mandibular glands.

c) Trial pheromone:

  • Used for reaching the destination for mating or utilize food source.
  • Eg: Poison , rectal and labial glands in Ants.
  • Labial glands in caterpillar.

d) Aggregation pheromone:

  • In insects for protection, reproduction and feeding.
  • Secretion stops after mating or continued feeding to prevent over feeding.
  • Mostly in coleoptera.
  • Eg; Geranoil, Genaoic acid and Necrolic acid in honeybee.
