Development status of irrigation

  • Detailed information and data regarding irrigation development in Nepal are still far from being complete.
  • Master plan for irrigation development in Nepal, 1990 has attempted to provide a comprehensive is estimated at 2.2 million ha.
  • If forest land is excluded from this figure it comes down to 1.8 million ha. By the end of 1992, the estimated irrigation command for which supplementary water was provided for at least the monsoon period only is about 1.091 million ha.
  • However, year round irrigation practiced is perhaps only 42.4% of this figure.
