Canine parvo-virus infection
- Normally occurs in dog ( 6-16 weeks age of dog is more susceptible)
- Morbidity : 100% and mortality: 10%
a) Etiology:
- Parvo-virus ( Major strains parvovirus-1 and parvovirus-11)
b) Mode of transmission:
- Direct contact with infected animal and its excretion
- Through fomites
- Infected kennel
c) Pathogenesis:
- Entry of virus through respiratory tract à multiply of cell à affects lymphatic system à causes immunosuppressive effect à attacks brain, liver and foetal cells à death due to severe dehydration or heart failure
d) Signs and symptoms:
- Haemorrhagic enteritis
- Temperature fluctuation; initially increases but later falls to subnormal level
- Vomition
- Diarrhoea (Semi-solid faeces mixed with mucous)
- Inappetance
- Dehydration
- Polydipsia
- Respiration and heart problem
e) Diagnosis:
- Sign and symptom
- Isolation of virus
- ELISA test
- FAT test
- Hematology
f) Differential diagnosis:
- Corona virus infection
- Canine distemper
g) Treatment:
- Fluid and electrolyte therapy to check dehydration
- Broad spectrum antibiotics
- Blood transfusion
- Steroids
- Strict hygiene in the kennel
- Isolation and treatment of infected animal
- Vaccination at regular interval
