Swine erysipelas
- Seen in growing pigs and mainly characterized by sudden death, fever, skin lesions and arthritis
- Can induce abortion in pregnant sow.
a) Etiology:
- Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae
b) Transmission:
- Saliva, nasal secretions, faeces and urine
- Incubation period is 1-7 days
- Through contaminated feed and water
- Skin wound, biting of insects
c) Signs and symptoms:
- Septicemia occurs after an incubation period of 2-3 days
- Animal walk with a stiff, stilted gait
- Abortion in pregnant sow
- Formation of diamond skin lesion
- High temperature ( 104-1060F)
- Conjunctivitis and vomiting
d) Diagnosis:
- Diamond shaped skin lesions
- Sudden death of normal pig
- Reluctance to move
e) Treatment:
- Penicillin
- Vaccination every six months
- Hygiene and sanitary practices
