Swine erysipelas

  • Seen in growing pigs and mainly characterized by sudden death, fever, skin lesions and arthritis
  • Can induce abortion in pregnant sow.

a) Etiology:

  • Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae

 

b) Transmission:

  • Saliva, nasal secretions, faeces and urine
  • Incubation period is 1-7 days
  • Through contaminated feed and water
  • Skin wound, biting of insects

 

 

c) Signs and symptoms:

  • Septicemia occurs after an incubation period of 2-3 days
  • Animal walk with a stiff, stilted gait
  • Abortion in pregnant sow
  • Formation of diamond skin lesion
  • High temperature ( 104-1060F)
  • Conjunctivitis and vomiting

 

d) Diagnosis:

  • Diamond shaped skin lesions
  • Sudden death of normal pig
  • Reluctance to move

 

e) Treatment:

  • Penicillin
  • Vaccination every six months
  • Hygiene and sanitary practices
