Energy:

– Energy is that force or power that enables the body to carry on the life sustaining activities.

– Energy is produced as a result of breakdown of CHO, fat and protein in the body.

– Energy is required in the body to perform the following functions :

a) Mechanical work

b) Maintain the body tissue

c) Growth

In the body the energy is available in four basic forms:

a) Chemical energy (synthesis of new compound)

b) Mechanical energy (muscle contraction)

c)Electrical energy (brain and nerve activity)

d) Thermal energy (regulation of body temperature)

Basal metabolism:

– The amount of energy needed by the body for maintenance of life  when the person is at digestive, physical and emotional rest.

Basal metabolic rate (BMR)

– It is the rate of internal chemical activity of resting tissue.

– BMR measures the energy used over 24 hrs while physically lying down and mentally resting in thermoneutral environment (no shivering and sweating).

– The measurements are taken early in the morning before any physical activity and 10-12 hrs after eating, drinking or smoking.
