Classification of rice
- Based on sub species : Indica , japonica and javonica
- Based on growing season :
I. Spring rice / chaitre rice :
- The yield of this rice is higher due to more number of sunny days , better fertilizer use efficiency (due to controlled water and less weed infestation.
- Important varieties are CH-45 , chaithe-4 , chaithe-6 , hardinath 1 , hardinath2 , etc.
ii. Upland rice / ghaiya :
- Its recommended modern var. are ghaiya-1 , ghaiya-2 and Bindheshwary and its indegineus vaerieties are taui , Bijhani , etc.
iii. Main season rice :
- Both photoperiod sensitive and insensitive var. are present.
- Indigineous var. are Anandi , Masina , Pokherili masino
- Recommended var : sabitri , sunaulo sughandha , loktantra , Ramdhan , etc.
iv. Boro rice/ winter rice :
- Coarse rice and the quality of jiuce ispoor.
- Require onger period during seedling stage because of dormant nature of varieties.
- Not common in Nepal , few farmers are starting to grow boro rice in Morang and Jhapa district of Nepal.
- Based on water regime :
I. Irrigated wet season rice :
- Irrigated low land condition
- Seedlings prepared in the nursery bed and transplanted in bunded puddied condition.
- Irrigation to supplement dams.
- Modern semi dwarf varieties and traditional tall varieties are grown in such condition.
ii. Irrigated dry season rice (chaithe rice):
- Similar with wet season rice where crop totally depend on irrigation , modern semidwarf varieties are grown under the situation.
iii. Shallow ranfed rice :
- Rice is transplanted in bundle and puddle condition .
- water depth is maintained from 0 to 10 cm from tillering to flowering.
- Modern semi dwarf traditional tall varieties are grown under this situation.
Rice has total 95 varieties till fiscal year 2072/73.

c) Denotified varieties : 12
Denotified variety of rice are : khajura-2 , Barkhe-2 , Durga , Laxmi , jaya , IR-8 , IR-20.
