Climatic requirement :
- Wheat is a winter season crop.
- Can be cultivated upto 3300 masl and also cultivated in tropical , sub-tropical and temperate zones.
a) Solar radiation :
- It is a long day plant which require photo-period of more than 12 hours.
- Local landraces and traditional variety are sensitive to photo-periodism. But there are some modern varieties which are insensitive to photo-periodism.
- More light intensity favors in tillering and grain filling.
- Cloudy weather with high RH and low temperature leads to rust attack.
b) Temperature :
- Wheat requires vernalization i.e. it should be exposed to cool temperature during seedling stage to induce flowering.
- Optimum temperature of seed germination growth and development is 20-25 0
- Temperature above 25 0C during ripening phase reduce grain filling.
C) Rainfall :
- For normal varieties 250-300 mm is optimum total rainfall and for hybrid varieties 500 mm water is required.
- Change in rainfall pattern affect total area under wheat.
