Morphology

  1. Root system :

A) Temporary root system :

  • It contains primary root and seminal root
  • It originate in the form of embryo in the form of radicle followed by seminal root.
  • Dies after crown root development.

 

 

B) Permanent root system :

  • Contains secondary root and crown root.
  • It originates from basal node of stem at around 21-25 DAS.
  • New tillers develops aditional crown roots.

  1. Shoot system
  • Stem / culm : 6 ndes and internodes , uppermost node is called peduncle which terminate with spike.
  • Leaves are short an have hairy auricle as compared to barley.
  • Spikelet : The main axix on which spikelet are arranged is called rachis. Spikelet contains glumes and 2-5 florets. Flora contains lemma , palea and stamens , single pestil , lodicules .
  • Grain : caryopsis , pericarp is fused to seed coat.
