Weed management

  • More vulnerable during initial growth of 50-60DAS.
  • shorten the fibre
  • staining of lint
  • difficulty in ginning
  • interfere picking

Mechanical methods

  • Tillage, Hoeing, Inter-row Cultivation, fallow system,
  • Flooding, Mulching and burning.
  • hoeing before 1st irrigation/ after 1 month of sowing found more effective in weed control.

Crop-based approaches

  • Competitive crop cultivation
  • Crop rotation- with wheat, chickpea, berseem
  • Intercropping– Finger millet, groundnut, chillies, sesamum
  • Increasing plant population

Chemical methods of weed management

a. Pre-plant:

  • Trifuralin @0.5-1.5 kg/ha
  • Fluchloralin @0.75-1.5 kg/ha
  • Pendimethalin @1.2-1.5 kg/ha

b. Pre-emergence:

  • Diuron @0.5-1.5 kg/ha
  • Flurometuron @1.0-1.5 kg/ha
  • Alachlor @1.5-3.0 kg/ha

[applied by making solution in 1000L of water to the field after the crop grows to 15 cm]

c. Post-emergence:

  • Metribuzin, Bentazol, Methzol can be used as post emergence.
