Weed management
- More vulnerable during initial growth of 50-60DAS.
- shorten the fibre
- staining of lint
- difficulty in ginning
- interfere picking
Mechanical methods
- Tillage, Hoeing, Inter-row Cultivation, fallow system,
- Flooding, Mulching and burning.
- hoeing before 1st irrigation/ after 1 month of sowing found more effective in weed control.
Crop-based approaches
- Competitive crop cultivation
- Crop rotation- with wheat, chickpea, berseem
- Intercropping– Finger millet, groundnut, chillies, sesamum
- Increasing plant population
Chemical methods of weed management
a. Pre-plant:
- Trifuralin @0.5-1.5 kg/ha
- Fluchloralin @0.75-1.5 kg/ha
- Pendimethalin @1.2-1.5 kg/ha
b. Pre-emergence:
- Diuron @0.5-1.5 kg/ha
- Flurometuron @1.0-1.5 kg/ha
- Alachlor @1.5-3.0 kg/ha
[applied by making solution in 1000L of water to the field after the crop grows to 15 cm]
c. Post-emergence:
- Metribuzin, Bentazol, Methzol can be used as post emergence.
