Innovative control method
- Innovative control includes insect attractants, repellents, anti-feedants, hormones, and their analogues.
- Their application is aimed at modifying, managing and regulating insect pests rather than merely killing them.
a. Insect Attractants:
- Attractants are those chemicals bringing positive response by insects through olfactory stimulation that orient them to the source of food, host plants, or opposite sexes.
b. Sex Attractants:
- Sex attractants are the pheromones produced by one individual to excite or stimulate and attract the opposite sex for the purpose of mating.
- They are active at very low concentration and are highly specific to their species.
c. Insect Repellents:
- Substances that prevent damage by making food or living condition unattractive for the pests are known as insect repellents.
- For many centuries, oil and ash have been used to prevent insect damage. Fire and smoke were the two oldest insect repellent known to man-kinds.
d. Anti-feedants:
- Anti-feedants are those chemical that inhibit feeding when applied or present in plants and in its absence, insects would feed.
