Surveillance systems
A. General surveillance:
- It is a process whereby information on particular pests which are of concern for an area is gathered from many sources, wherever it is available and provided for use the national plant protection organization (NPPO).
Specific surveillance:
These are official surveys and should follow a plan which is approved by the National Plant Protection organization (NPPO).
- Detection surveillance: surveillance conducted in an area to determine if pests are present.
- Delimiting surveillance: surveillance conducted to establish the boundaries of an area considered to be infested by or free from a pest.
- Monitoring surveillance: Ongoing surveillance to verify the characteristics of a pest population.
Specific survey should follow specific plan
- Identification of the target pests.
- Identification of scope (geographical area, production system, season).
- Identification of timing (dates, frequency, duration), In case of commodity pests lists, the target commodity.
- Indication of the statistical basis (level of confidence, no. of samples, selection and number of sites, frequency of sampling, assumptions.
