Fundamental strategy for sustainable agriculture
The conference held in April 1991 jointly organized by FAO and Govt. of Netherland recommended the following strategies to meet the challenges of Sustainable agriculture and rural development:
- Developed and developing countries should recognize their roles and responsibilities for applying principles of sustainable agriculture by improving economic relations.
- They should reconstruct their agricultural practices so as to meet the demands of sustainability.
- The international community must accept the need to technical and financia assistance in special field of SARD.
- Population control policies should aim to improve the prospects of sustainability in long term.
- Government and societies must recognize the agriculture and rural people perform a vital role in insuring food security and maintaining the renewable natural resource base to achieve the goals of sustainability.
- Fair terms of exchange should be established among producers, industry and consumers.
- Small scale and resource poor farmers should receive better aceess to education and training with appropriate technologies and resources.
- Campaigns should be undertaken to increase the public awareness for the need of SARD.
