Chain Surveying

Principle of Chain Surveying

  • Based on the “Whole to Part” principle: Control points are first established (control survey), and details are then filled in.
  • Utilizes triangulation: The area is divided into well-conditioned triangles.
  • Well-conditioned triangle: Internal angles between 30° to 120° (Ideal: Equilateral triangle, each 60°).

Suitable When:

  • Surface is level
  • Area is small
  • Formation of well-conditioned triangles is easy

Not Suitable When:

  • Terrain is uneven
  • Area is large or has many details
  • Difficult to form well-conditioned triangles
