Field Procedure
- Reconnaissance
- Preliminary study of area.
- Prepare a key plan (index sketch) showing boundaries and features.
- Marking Stations
- Use ranging rods to mark temporary stations.
- Reference Sketches
- Mark stations with respect to permanent features.
- Running Survey Lines
- Begin from base line and proceed to cover all main and subsidiary lines.
Selection of Stations
- Should be intervisible
- Form well-conditioned triangles
- Each triangle must have a check line
- Tie lines to avoid long offsets
- Preferably over flat ground and avoid obstacles
Base Line Selection & Measurement
- Run through center of the area.
- Measured horizontally with precision (2-3 times and take average).
- Ensure straightness and place ideally on level ground.
- If possible, use two perpendicular base lines.
Field Book & Booking
- Records all field data.
- Size: ~22.5 cm × 12.5 cm.
- Single Line Book: One red center line; Double Line Book: Two blue center lines.
- Entries start from bottom of page.
- Use symbols for features; new chain line = new page.
- Always face chaining direction when recording.
