Pile foundation
- Piles are used to transfer loads through soft soils or water. Piles may be of wooden, concrete or steel iron. Pile foundation are of different types:
a. End bearing piles
- If load is transferred through the soft soil or water to a suitable bearing stratum by means of end bearing of the soil and is known as end bearing or point bearing pile.
b. Friction pile
- If the load is transferred to a depth of the relatively weak soil by means of skin friction along the length of pile is known as friction pile.
c. Laterally loaded pile
- Piles are used to resists horizontal loads as a foundation for retaining walls and bridge abutments.
- In the case of large lateral loads or inclined force the piles driven at the same inclination resists force more effectively called batter piles.
d. Tension pile
- Sometimes piles are used to resists upward force and they are called the tension piles.
- These tension piles used for compacting the loose granules deposits are called compaction pile.
