Transversing
- Surveying which involves a series of connected lines is known as transversing.
- The size of transverse is known as transverse leg.
- The length of transverse leg are measured by chain or tape and the direction are fixed by compass or theodolite.
Classification of transversing
A. Based on instrument used in transversing:
a) Chain transversing:
- It is mainly conducted when it is not possible to adopt triangulation.
- In this method, the angles between adjacent sides are fixed by chain angles.
- The entire survey is conducted by chain and tape only and no angular measurements are taken.
b) Compass transversing:
- In this method, fore and back bearing of transverse leg is measured by prismatic compass and the sides of transverse is measured by tape.
- Then the observed bearing is verified and necessary correction for local attraction is applied.
c) Theodolite transversing:
- In such transversing, the horizontal angles between the transverse legs are measured by theodolite.
- The length of the legs are measured by chain or by employing stadia method.
d) Plain table transversing:
- In this method, a plan table is set at every transverse station in the clockwise or anticlockwise direction, and the circuit is finally closed.
B. Based on base of track:
a) Open transverse
b) Closed transverse
