Types of cement
a. OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) :
- It is mostly used which is suitable for general purpose such as pavement, bridge, culverts, water tank.
- It has adequate resistance to dry, shrinkage and cracking but has less resistance to chemical attack.
- It reaches in design and strength in 26 days.
b. PPC (Portland Pozzolana cement):
- Pozzolana is natural or artificial materials containing silica and alumunia in a reactive form such as volcanic ash, fly ash, powder burnt brick etc.
- In this PPC, 25 % OPC is mixed with definite proportion of pozzolana materials.
Suitability of PPC:
- Economical to use
- Produce less heat
- It has low early strength and is not suitable for high grade concrete.
c. Rapid hardening cement (RHC ):
- It is known as high early strength cement.
- It is used where frame work is to be removed quickly or when early strength is necessary for further construction.
- It has high heat of hydration and achieves its design in 7 days or less.
- Due to high heat generation, it should not be used in mass concreting or large structural section.
d. White cement
- It is a variety of OPC. It is white in color and use for floor finished, plaster work, ornamental work.
- It is used as mortar for marble and tile.
e. Quick setting cement:
- It sets faster than OPC. Initial setting time is 5 minutes. Final setting time is 30 minutes.
- It is used for concreting underwater and in running water.
