Joint vetch

Introduction

  • Scientific name: Aeschynomene americana
  • Common name: Thornless mimosa
  • Erect ascending summer growing perennial legume, native to Central and South America.
  • Deep rooted and competes well with grasses.
  • Inflorescence a loose, few flowered receme, violet to purple to pinkish orange.
  • Seeds grey green to brown color.
  • Seed yield upto 1 t/ha and sown at a rate of 40kg/ha and seed should be scarified.

Soil

  • Well adapted to poor or low fertile soil, derived from sandstone, shale and granite and is tolerant to infertile wet soil.
  • Doesn’t tolerate water logging condition.

 

Yield

  • DM is about 4-5 t/ha in 4-5 cuttings.
  • Yields upto 14t/ha under managed fertilizer condition.
  • Contains 20% crude protein.
