Terminology of grazing

  1. Alternate stocking: The repeated grazing and resting of forage using two paddocks in succession.
  2. Continuous stocking: A method of grazing livestock on a specific unit of land where animals have unrestricted and uninterrupted access throughout the time period when grazing is allowed.
  3. Creep grazing: The practice of allowing juvenile animals to graze areas that their dams can’t access at the same time.
  4. Strip grazing: Confining animals to an area of grazing land to be grazed in a relatively short period, where the paddock size is varied to allow access to a specific land area.
  5. Standard livestock unit (SLU): It is a unit to measure stocking rate in grazing studies of a non-lactating bovine weighing 500 kg.
