Climate

  • Litchi is an important subtropical fruit crop.
  • Litchi is cultivated upto 1000 m and considered as sub-tropical fruit
  • It requires a moist subtropical climate without heavy frost or hot dry winds.
  • The plants grow luxuriantly at 30°C.The maximum temperature during flowering and fruit development varies from 21°C in February to 38°C in June
  • Prefers cool dry, frost-free winter and long hot summers with high rainfall and humidity
  • In Nepal grown in the areas having the temperature range of 22 to 36°C
  • Alternate spells of rain and dry heat in summer cause fruit cracking and drop

 

Soil

  • It does best in deep well drained loamy soil, rich in organic matter.
  • It can also flourish on light sandy loam.
  • It cannot grow well in rocky soil.
  • It prefers slightly acidic soils.
  • The water table must be at least 1.5 meters deep. Stagnant water causes root decay.
