Heritability

• The ratio between the genetic and phenotypic variances for a character is known as heritability and is often expressed as percent.
• Heritability ( %) due to

Narrow sense (h²_ns) = Va/Vp

Broad sense ( h²_bs) = Va/Vp

Vp = Vg + Ve  , Vg = Va + Vd + Vi

where,

Vp = phenotypic variance , Vg = genotypic variance  , Ve = environmental variance , Vg = Vp – Ve

Ve = (Vp₁ + V_p2 + V_F1) / 3 , V_F2 = Vg + Ve

Vg = (MS due to genotype – MS due to error) / R

V_F2  = 1/2 D + 1/4 H + Ve

V_B1 + V_B2 = 1/2 D + 1/2 H + 2 V_e

1/2 D = 2V_E2 – [ V_B1 + V_B2]

H_bs  = Vg/ V_F2

H_ns = 1/2 D/ V_F2

H(b) = (ΣXY – ΣXΣY/N)/ ΣX² – (Σx)²/N
