Heritability

  • The ratio between the genetic and phenotypic variances for a character is known as heritability and is often expressed as percent.
  • Heritability ( %) due to

Narrow sense (h2ns) = Va/Vp

Broad sense ( h2bs) = Va/Vp

Vp = Vg + Ve  , Vg = Va + Vd + Vi

where,

Vp = phenotypic variance , Vg = genotypic variance  , Ve = environmental variance , Vg = Vp – Ve

Ve = (Vp1 + Vp2 + VF1) / 3 , VF2 = Vg + Ve

Vg = (MS due to genotype – MS due to error) / R

VF2  = 1/2 D + 1/4 H + Ve

VB1 + VB2 = 1/2 D + 1/2 H + 2 Ve

1/2 D = 2VE2 – [ VB1 + VB2]

Hbs  = Vg/ VF2

Hns = 1/2 D/ VF2

H(b) = (ΣXY – ΣXΣY/N)/ ΣX2 – (Σx)2/N

Where, X = Value of mid parent and Y = value of offspring
