Introduction

A surface/article/medium is consider sterile if it is free from all living micro-organisms including spores. Sterilization is the process of making an article, surface or medium sterile.

Disinfection

It is the process of destruction of vegetative forms of pathogenic organisms which are capable of producing infection but not necessarily resistant to spores.

Objectives of sterilization

  • To establish aseptic conditions for pure culture preparation
  • To reduce risk of contamination on surgical apparatus.
  • Control disease by killing germs.
  • Also minimizes biological changes on organisms.
