Cattle breeds and characteristics

Indigenous breeds

Siri

  1. Found in eastern hills like ilam, pachthar
  2. Found at altitude of 1200 m
  3. Can produced 6 liters milk / day
  4. Average body weighs 280 kg
  5. Attain sexual maturing at about 3.5 years

 

Lulu

  1. Found in manag, mustang and dolpa
  2. Found at high altitude
  3. Can produce 2 litres milk per day
  4. Average body weighted is 225 kg
  5. Number of pure breed is declining

 

Aachhami

  1. Found in western hilly region (aachham, bajura, bajhang)
  2. Can produce 2 liters milk per day
  3. Average body weight 125 kg
  4. Smallest breed in world

 

Khaila

  1. Found in far-western hilly region (doti, baitadi, dadeldhura)
  2. Can produce 205 l milk per day
  3. Average body weights 180 kg
  4. Attain sexual maturing at 4 years

 

Pahadi

  1. Found in inner terai and hilly region across country
  2. Milk yield 205 l per day
  3. Black in color
  4. Bulls are used for draft purpose

 

Yak

  1. Found in mountain region above 300m
  2. Milk 0.6 l per day
  3. Chauri: milk yielder and Jhopkyos : sterile and good transportation
  4. Sexual maturity at 5 years
  5. Population is declining
  6. Exotic breeds of cattle

 

Jersey

  1. Originated in channel island of jersey
  2. Body: medium and compass, wedge shaped.
  3. Female are docile and male are furious
  4. Milk yield : 4000 kg / lactation with 5% fat.
  5. Male weight : 675 kg , female: 450 kg
  6. Can tolerate tropical and humid climate.
  7. Holestein Friesian
  8. Developed in northen netherland (holland)
  9. Body: massive and well built, wedge shaped
  10. Color: white marks on black body
  11. Milk yield : 5500-6000 kg / lactation with 3% fat.
  12. Large capacious udder with prominent milk with vein
  13. Body weight : male : 1000 kg, female: 675 kg

 

 Brown swiss

  1. Originated in swiss alps of switzerland.
  2. Body : wedge shaped , compact.
  3. Color : Brown in color.
  4. Milk yiel : 5000 kg / lactation with 4% fall.
  5. Body weight : male 900 kg , female 650 kg.
  6. Dual purpose ( milk and beef breed).

  1. Originated in hariyana , punjab province
  2. Body : long and compact structure.
  3. Colour : white and grey
  4. Milk yield : 600-800 kg/ lactation
  5. Body weight : male 500 kg and female is 350 kg.
  6. Developed and sheath small.
  7. Well developed and compact udder.

 

Sahiwal 

  1. Originated in punjab province of pakistan.
  2. Body deep , loose skin , short legs
  3. color : red brown with or without splashes
  4. Milk yield : 2100-2200 kg / lactation.
  5. Body weight : male 520 kg and female 350 kg.
  6. It is also resistant to bloat and heat tolerant.

 

 

Red sindhi :

  1. Originated in sindh province of pakistan.
  2. Body : Medium size , compact and are docile.
  3. Color : Red , male are dark red.
  4. Milk yield : 1250-1800 kg / lactation.
  5. Boy weight : male 450 kg and female 235 kg.
  6. Well developed udder and ,milk vein.

 

 

Ayishire 

  1. Originated from Ayrshire of scotland.
  2. Commonly found in finland , U.K. , Canada , America , New Zealand , Australia.
  3. Body is covered with red and white strip.
  4. Horn are wide and curved.
  5. Spink (Backbone) is straight.
  6. Milk production : 5000 kh per lactation with 4 % fat.
  7. Adult cow weight 500-700 kg.
  8. Adult ox weight 800-1000 kg.
