Classification of Orchids
A. Based on Growth Habits/pattern
a. Monopodial orchids
➢ One single main stem and continuous to grow indefinitely.
➢ Results in the pyramidal forms of the growth typical of conifers. Eg. Vanda sp, Rhynchostylis sp, Phalaenopsis, Polyrrhiza etc.
➢ Also known as one-footed orchids.
b. Sympodial orchids
➢ In this, the growth in which apical buds withers at the end of growing season.
➢ Growth is continuing by the lateral buds in following season.
➢ Bear pseudo bulbs and grow side ways.
➢ Also known as many footed orchids. e.g. Dendrobium sp and Cymbidium sp, (most commercial, Himalayan region), Cattleya, Vanilla etc.
B. Based on Habitat
a. Epiphytes
➢ Those orchids which grown on the branches and stem of the trees and produce epiphytic roots (aerial). They absorb nutrients from the branches and the stem of the tree but do not suck the sap of the plant. Eg. Vanda, Arides and Cymbidum etc.

b. Saprophytes
➢ Grow and survive on dead organic matter or body of the plant. Eg. Epipogon.
c. Lithophytes
➢ Grow on rocks. Eg. Lipapis sps
d. Terrestrial
➢ Grow on ground. Cattleya sp.
