Pruning in rose
- time of pruning in terai is done at first fortnight of October.
- At the time of pruning, the cut given to the branch should be slanting cut opposite to the bud. So, rotting of bud may not take place by rain.
- While pruning, all the intercrossed, in laced, week and diseased branches should be removed.
- In HT rose and Floribundas, amount of pruning is done according to the age of the plant.
- Light pruning (<4 year): each bush will have 6-8 canes & each cane will have 6-8 buds.
- Moderate pruning (4-8 years): each bush will have 4-6 canes & 4-6 buds/ cane.
- Heavy pruning (> 8 year): also called hard pruning: each bush will have 2-4 canes & each cane will have 2-4 buds.
- After pruning, cut should be covered with fungicidal paint to check the infection of Dieback pathogen (Diplodia rosarum).
- Fungicidal paint can be prepared by mixing Linseed oil (heat and cool), lime and CuSO4 at the ratio of 3:2:1. (CuSO4 should be fried).
Root exposing in rose:
- Root exposing is also done at the time of pruning which makes the bigger size of flower and less infestation of diseases and insect.
- Root exposing is done during pruning for 15 days.
- After 15 days, 5 kg FYM and 50 gm rose mix (5:8:18 NPK)/bush is added, filled back then irrigate the plant.
- After 35-40 days, flowering will start. This practice increases the flower size of the rose due to the physiological stress to the plant. It increases the C/N ratio and it also makes the plant healthy.
Harvesting stage and time
- Red and Pink Roses are harvested at a stage when first two petals are beginning to unfold and calyx is in downward position.
- Similarly, in yellow cvs. – Slightly later than red and pink rose and in white cvs- slightly later than red and pink.
- For distant market supply, roses should be harvested at tight bud stage.
- Harvesting should be done during cool hours of the day in evening.
- Evening is the best times for harvesting cut roses. Immediately after the cut, put the flower in the water containing bucket.
